ICYMI: OAG’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit Recovers Over $21 Million  

RICHMOND, Va. – In the 2025 - 2026 Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU) annual report, Attorney General Jay Jones announced that the unit recovered over $21 million from providers who defrauded or attempted to defraud the Medicaid program.

Whether it is billing for services not rendered, using improperly trained or uncertified employees, or abusing or neglecting patients, our talented team of investigators and prosecutors end these abuses wherever they are found,” said Attorney General Jay Jones.  

The Richmond Times Dispatch: AG's Medicaid fraud unit wins $21 million from fraudsters 

An Attorney General’s investigative team last year recovered more than $21 million that fraudsters took or tried to take from Medicaid, the joint state and federal healthcare coverage for low-income and disabled Virginians.

Virginia pays $8.2 billion of the costs of the $29 billion-a-year Medicaid program. 

The recoveries during the fiscal year that ended June 30 include $17.8 million from criminal cases. 

These included: 

• $10.9 million from six convictions of personal care services agencies. 

• $5.1 million from three physicians. 

• $987,000 from 30 personal care attendants. 

• $328,000 from three unlicensed mental health counselors. 

• $214,000 from licensed mental health counselors. 

The Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control unit also recovered $3.3 million from civil cases.
