Fake Check Scams

If you receive a check in the mail from an individual or business you are not familiar with, it is likely a fake check. No matter what reason is given by the sender for providing the check, if the sender is not known to you, NEVER deposit the check and especially never wire money back to the sender. The check is almost always a fake and no matter how legitimate it looks, you will owe the bank any money you withdraw from depositing those “funds.”

Important Point to Remember: Your financial institution is not responsible for verifying the legitimacy of any check you present to them. It is up to you to know who gave you the check and whether that person is trustworthy. If you deposit a check that turns out to be a fake, it is not your financial institution’s duty to reimburse you.
