DUTIES: The Deputy University Counsel for Health Affairs, based on the campus of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, will serve the Attorney General under the direction of the Chief of the Education Section and the University Counsel. The Deputy will supervise two Associate University Counsel providing representation to the University of Virginia Health System.  The University of Virginia is comprised of eleven schools in Charlottesville, an academic medical center, plus the College at Wise in Southwest Virginia. The University of Virginia’s renowned academic medical center is committed to providing outstanding patient care, educating tomorrow's health care leaders and discovering new and better ways to treat diseases. The University's Medical Center, School of Medicine and School of Nursing are recognized for their excellence in patient care, education and research. The Deputy University Counsel for Health Affairs will handle a broad range of legal matters and serve all components of the University of Virginia Health System.  The Deputy will supervise two additional attorneys in the Health Unit of the Office of the University Counsel, reporting to the University Counsel. The Health Unit will provide advice on legal matters involving the University’s academic medical center, including research and patient care functions, grants and contracts, employment, student affairs, health care regulations, statutory compliance, and mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures. Additionally, the Deputy University Counsel will provide other legal services to the University and the Commonwealth as directed by the University Counsel and the Office of the Attorney General.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidates will have managerial skills, strong analytical ability and excellent written and oral communication skills.  A minimum of ten years of experience in health care law is required. Preference will be given to applicants with managerial experience and prior representation of academic medical centers.  High-level organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work under pressure are required. Must be admitted to the Virginia bar.

 

SALARY: Commensurate with experience and education.
