DUTIES: The Office of the Attorney General seeks an attorney to serve as an Assistant Attorney General/Unit Manager in the General Civil Unit of the Office’s Trial Section. The successful candidate will supervise and manage a team of attorneys who defend the Commonwealth, its agencies and officials in state and federal courts, with a focus on tort, § 1983, and constitutional claims. In addition to the management and supervision duties, the unit manager also handles all aspects of litigation, including drafting pleadings and briefs, conducting discovery, etc., as well as fact investigations and the provision of advice to clients through the course of litigation, court appearances, and trial work.
QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will have exceptional management ability, written and verbal communication skills and proficiency in time management. The candidate will also have knowledge of the rules of court and litigation procedures through academic training, seminars, and legal work in this area; knowledge of techniques for conducting litigation and resolving disputes; knowledge of the preparation of briefs and presentation of arguments for cases in state and federal courts. This position requires that the candidate also possess the ability to exercise sound judgement, tact, and discretion, quickly assimilate oral and written data, analyze facts, and draw logical conclusions. The successful candidate will also have computer proficiency. Admission to the Virginia State Bar is required. A minimum of seven (7) years of relevant litigation experience is preferred.
DUTIES: The attorney will manage a team that provides legal services to agencies in the Commonwealth on a variety of litigation-related matters. The position may work with any and all agencies and institutions of the Commonwealth during the performance of these duties. This position is located in Richmond and reports to the Chief of the Trial Section in the Civil Litigation Division. As with all positions, other duties as necessary or appropriate may also be assigned. Some overnight travel may be required.
SALARY: Starting salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
