ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL (00641)

DUTIES: The Criminal Justice and Public Safety Division ("CJ&PSD”) is the primary prosecutorial arm of the Office of the Attorney General. This cross-designated position, located in the Newport News division of the United States Attorney's Office ("USAO”), will report to both the Chief of the Major Crimes and Emerging Threats ("MCET”) Section of the Virginia Office of the Attorney General and to the Managing Assistant United States Attorney at the USAO's Newport News division.  The position, which will be dual hatted as an Assistant Attorney General and a Special Assistant United States Attorney, is responsible for violent crime prosecutions handled by the CJ&PSD and the USAO.  The position requires extensive knowledge of the state and federal criminal justice systems and state government. Prosecutions will primarily focus on violent crime and firearm offenses and may include drug trafficking, sex-trafficking, and money-laundering. Historically, this position has also been responsible for providing legal advice to the Office of the Inspector General, Virginia State Police, Department of Criminal Justice Services, Department of Forensic Science and the Bureau of Enforcement of the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. The position requires the ability to analyze and provide concise, appropriate, practical and accurate advice on legal issues. The position handles other assignments as needed. Additionally, the position is responsible for assisting in the review and drafting of official advisory opinions of the Attorney General and reviewing legislation during sessions of the Virginia General Assembly.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must be a United States citizen, have graduated from an accredited law school, and be admitted to the Virginia State Bar or be eligible for admission. It is preferred that the ideal candidate for this position have a minimum of five years of relevant experience, including prosecutorial experience in Virginia and/or in federal courts. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and good judgment are required as well as excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to analyze and manage complex cases. Starting salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. An appointment to this position is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
