ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL

This attorney will serve as lead counsel to State education agencies responsible for K-12 education:  the Board of Education and Department of Education (other than special education).  The attorney will advise on K-12 issues (e.g., FERPA, teacher licensing, etc.), as well as matters more generally related to the administration of government (e.g., FOIA, personnel, and procurement).  

 

DUTIES: This individual will report to the Chief of the Education Section, handling a broad range of legal issues related to K-12 education.  Although serving as lead counsel to the assigned agencies, the individual will work closely with the attorney responsible for advising on special education matters.   The individual will also provide more general legal services to the assigned clients, including personnel, FOIA, FERPA, administrative process, and policy development and review.  This individual also should be able to provide training on legal issues to agency personnel and be prepared to appear in the appropriate state or federal court as necessary.  This individual also must be able to respond to legal requests in a timely fashion and work in the evening on occasion.  Occasional travel also is expected.  Additionally, this individual will provide other legal services to agencies in the Education secretariat as directed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidate will have excellent analytical and writing abilities and oral communication skills, with a minimum of five years’ practice.  Experience in State government practice is preferred; and knowledge of and experience with education law is highly preferred.  Excellent interpersonal skills are also required.  High level of organization skills, an ability to manage large numbers of projects simultaneously and to work under pressure is required.  Must be admitted to the Virginia bar or eligible for admission.  

 

SALARY: Salary commensurate with qualifications.
