This attorney, based on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, will serve the Attorney General under the direction of the Chief of the Education Section, and will serve the university by providing legal advice and representation to university leadership, administration, faculty and employees on a wide variety of legal matters, in addition to other duties as assigned or authorized by the Office of the Attorney General.  As University Counsel, the attorney will also direct the Office of University Counsel at GMU, heading the 4-lawyer team, plus support staff.  GMU is Virginia‚Äôs largest public research university, with 39,000 students on three campuses in Virginia and one in Korea.  This position is based in Fairfax, Virginia.

 

DUTIES: It is anticipated that the attorney will handle a broad range of legal matters, serving all divisions of the University.  Serving as agency counsel requires advising decision-makers throughout the organization on the legal risks and obligations associated with their duties as employees or board members.  University Counsel may also represent GMU in state or federal court, before regulatory bodies and to third parties in pre-litigation and transactional matters.  The University Counsel is responsible for guiding the work of the Associate University Counsels.  Additionally, this individual will provide other legal services to the Commonwealth as directed the Office of the Attorney General.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will have excellent analytical abilities and written and oral communication skills and be able to respond to legal requests in a timely fashion.  Excellent interpersonal skills are also required. High level organizational skills and an ability to manage many projects simultaneously and work under pressure are required. A minimum of ten years of experience in the general practice of law is required. Preference will be given to applicants with specific experience in the representation higher education institutions.  This position will be based at the University.  Admission to the Virginia Bar is required before beginning employment.

 

SALARY: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
