SEXUALLY VIOLENT PREDATORS CIVIL COMMITMENT SECTION

 

DUTIES:  Assigned to the Sexually Violent Predators Civil Commitment Section (SVPCCS), this attorney oversees the investigation and related litigation of persons being considered for involuntary civil commitment as sexually violent predators.  This individual will be assigned to litigate civil commitments in circuit courts throughout the Commonwealth.  The attorney must develop cases for trial, including collection of relevant information, evaluation of cases, coordination with expert witnesses, and prosecution of probable cause hearings, motions hearings, and trials; the attorney will also handle annual review hearings arising from the civil commitment.  This attorney is responsible for handling a substantial caseload and maintaining files for each case.  Some overnight travel is required.  This position will work out of the Virginia Attorney General’s Office in Abingdon, Virginia.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Applicants must have graduated from an accredited law school, be admitted to the Virginia State Bar and should have at least 3 years of litigation experience.  Prior experience dealing with the examination of expert witnesses is preferred but not required.  The successful candidate will have excellent analytical and writing abilities and oral communication skills as evidenced by a writing sample and references.  Excellent interpersonal skills are required.
