The Office of the Attorney General is seeking a motivated individual to serve as the primary attorney for the Office’s responsibilities under the Virginia Voting Right Act within the Office of Civil Rights.  This is a first-of-its-kind opportunity in Virginia.  There may also be opportunities to work in other areas of the Office’s Civil Rights portfolio, such as prosecuting instances of discrimination, violations of fair housing laws, and police misconduct.  We offer the challenge and reward of public service, work-life balance, and an attractive compensation package inclusive of paid time off, paid holidays, health/dental/life insurance, retirement and more.

DUTIES:  The successful candidate will serve as the primary attorney handling voting rights challenges and preclearance review for the Office of the Attorney General.  This includes bringing civil actions when there is reasonable cause to believe that a violation of an election law has occurred and the rights of any voter or group of voters have been affected by the violation.  It also entails review of proposed election administration changes by localities and recommending whether to issue no objection certifications.  The candidate will also work with the rest of the team in the Office of Civil Rights to assist with the remainder of its portfolio, which includes combating discrimination in employment, education, and places of public accommodation; enforcing Virginia’s fair housing laws; and investigating and addressing instances of alleged law enforcement misconduct.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Federal and state litigation experience is required, as is a Virginia Bar license.  A minimum of five (5) years of civil rights or election law experience is preferred but other relevant experience will be considered.  The position requires exceptional written and verbal communication skills, proficiency in time management, and the flexibility to work both independently and as a team member.  Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to work well under pressure and adjust priorities in short order.  This position presents an exciting and rewarding opportunity for the right candidate to help develop an important body of law and to perform a valuable public service.
