CRIMNAL JUSTICE AND PUBLIC SAFETY DIVISION
MAJOR CRIMES & EMERGING THREATS SECTION

DUTIES:  Participate in investigations of sexual abuse and other crimes under the Virginia criminal code related to the OAG’s investigation of clergy abuse. Assist with witness interviews, extensive document review and report writing.  Work collaboratively with OAG analyst and prosecutors as well as state and other law enforcement agencies. Prepare evidence for prosecution and testify to such findings in state courts as needed. Assist with special projects as needed.  Some travel may be required, including overnight.  This is not a sworn law enforcement position.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate hired into this position should possess knowledge of criminal law and elements required for probable cause, skills in developing investigative strategies, effective use of resources, ability to use judgement, tact, and discretion, ability to conduct interviews eliciting information from witnesses and targets, to quickly assimilate oral and written data, to analyze facts, and draw logical conclusions. Ability to maintain records, and prepare reports and correspondence related to the work, effectively testify as a witness in all courts and organize work. Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills. Successful candidate will demonstrate proficiency in time management, ability to handle multiple concurrent tasks, strong planning, organizational, and writing skills, ability to work independently and as a team member, ability to organize and analyze large quantities of information, keen attention to detail, and a high degree of initiative. Candidates should have demonstrated computer proficiency with word processing and database management systems (Microsoft products preferred).  It is preferred that applicants have a criminal justice or related undergraduate degree, law enforcement certification or commensurate experience.  Major course work in criminal justice or prior investigative experience is preferred, however, an equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the required qualifications may be substituted for educational criteria.
