The Virginia Office of the Attorney General is seeking an attorney to join the Transportation Section of the Government Operations & Transactions Division.


The Transportation Section encounters an exciting and challenging array of issues while supporting the agencies and entities responsible for Virginia’s transportation network, including roads, rail, port, space, and air.  As a member of the Section, the attorney will provide a wide range of legal services to these agencies, both directly and in conjunction with the Section Chief and other Assistant Attorneys General.  This position will serve in a general capacity, providing legal advice in the areas of procurement, litigation, regulatory appeals, and/or employment law. 

QUALIFICATIONS: The selected candidate should possess the knowledge of the law in transportation legal issues, agreements, contracts and grants developed through academic training, seminars, and technical and legal work experience in the specialty area, knowledge of fundamental subjects in law, and of legal research procedures. Knowledge of the preparation and presentation of arguments for decisions and cases before state and federal agencies and courts, and of applicable court rules, rules of evidence, and administrative rules and procedures, the ability to use judgment, tact, and discretion, to quickly assimilate oral and written data, to analyze facts, and to draw logical conclusions, express legal interpretations or conclusions of law clearly and logically in oral and written form. The candidate should possess the ability to maintain records, and prepare reports and correspondence related to the work, coordinate and function as a lead attorney or counsel in highly complex transportation cases and transactions, organize work, establish priorities, and maintain good interpersonal relations and communications with other attorneys and support staff, as well as effective working relationships with government officials and the general public. The ideal candidate will possess skills of persuasion and consensus building, computer literacy to include proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Worldox, LawBase, etc, the ability to persuade and build consensus and the ability to manage time effectively and to record time for billing purposes. Familiarity in one or more of the following areas is preferred: state or federal procurement law, including negotiating and drafting contracts and grants; general litigation; regulatory appeals; or employment law, including state grievance procedure. Candidates should be able to communicate well with all levels of staff and management; must have excellent written and oral communication skills and be able to work well within a team of professionals.  Must be admitted to the Virginia bar.

SALARY:  Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
