ASSITANT ATTORNEY GENERAL/ASSOCIATE UNIVERSITY COUNSEL
VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

 

The attorney will provide representation and a wide variety of legal services to Virginia Military Institute.  Located in Lexington, Virginia, VMI is the oldest state-supported military college in the United States. 

 

Duties:  It is anticipated that the attorney will handle a broad range of legal matters, serving all divisions of the institution, in coordination with the other attorneys in the Office of the University Counsel.  Serving as agency counsel requires advising decision-makers throughout the organization on the legal risks and obligations associated with their duties as employees or board members.  Institute Counsel may also represent VMI in state or federal court, before regulatory bodies and to third parties in pre-litigation and transactional matters.  Additionally, this individual will provide other legal services to the Commonwealth as directed the Office of the Attorney General.

Minimum Qualifications:  Successful candidate will have excellent analytical abilities and written and oral communication skills and be able to respond to legal requests in a timely fashion.  Excellent interpersonal skills are also required. High level organizational skills and an ability to manage many projects simultaneously and work under pressure are required. A minimum of five years of experience in the general practice of law is required. Preference will be given to applicants with specific experience in the representation higher education institutions.  Experience with military organizations is desirable.  Although it is preferred that the attorney be based at VMI, for the right candidate, working out of the Richmond OAG with regular trips to Lexington may be considered.  Admission to the Virginia State Bar is required PRIOR to commencing employment.

Salary: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
