CRIMINAL APPEALS SECTION

 

DUTIES:  This attorney will represent the Commonwealth in actions involving petitions for writs of actual innocence.  Responsibilities include reviewing, investigating, and responding to petitions for writs of actual innocence filed in the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court of Virginia.  In addition, this attorney will handle related evidentiary hearings, appeals, and other litigation at all judicial levels in both state and federal courts.  Experience in handling complex criminal or civil litigation, including trials, required.  Some overnight travel will be required.  Duties also include advice and assistance on other matters related to criminal law and procedure, including legislative issues before the Virginia General Assembly.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  The candidate should have a good academic record, as well as demonstrated excellent legal writing, research and oral communication skills, and possess superior analytical ability, objectivity and maturity of judgment.  At least one year of experience as a licensed attorney is required and one to three years of judicial law clerk, trial or appellate experience is highly desirable.  Criminal law experience is preferred.  Applicants must have graduated from an accredited law school. Admission to the Virginia State Bar Required.

 

SALARY:  Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
