The Office of the Attorney General is seeking an experienced civil litigation attorney to serve as an Assistant Attorney General in the Division of Human Rights of the Office’s Civil Litigation Division.  We offer the challenge and opportunity of public service, work-life balance, and an attractive compensation package inclusive of paid time off, paid holidays, health/dental/life insurance, retirement and more.




DUTIES:  The successful candidate will serve as the lead enforcement attorney who brings civil enforcement actions alleging violations of the Virginia Human Rights Act.  Specifically, this attorney will plan and direct litigation activities that focus on the enforcement the anti-discrimination provisions of the Virginia Human Rights Act (VHRA), including the preparation and presentation of complex civil cases before state circuit courts.  This will require the ability to plan, direct and control litigation activities, involving subject matter jurisdiction, adequacy and admissibility of evidence, proper application of judicial precedent, and the rules of civil procedure.  These civil actions will be based on alleged violations that raise an issue of general public importance or involve patterns and practices of discrimination in employment, places of public accommodation, including educational institutions as well as other areas covered by the VHRA.  This attorney will also work closely with the Division’s investigators to assist with investigative plans and preparing final determination analyses for complaints alleging violations of the VHRA or other civil rights violations in preparation for and support of litigation by this Office.  This attorney may also assist with litigating fair housing cases in state circuit courts, including the drafting pleadings and briefs, conducting all aspects of discovery, advising agency clients and communicating with complainants through the course of litigation, mediation, court appearances, and trial and appellate work.   


QUALIFICATIONS:  Admission to the Virginia State Bar required.  A minimum of four (4) years of civil litigation in federal or state court is preferred but similar litigation or other relevant experience will be considered.  A working knowledge of federal and state civil rights laws is also preferred.  The position requires exceptional written and verbal communication skills, proficiency in time management, the ability to manage a diverse and challenging caseload, and the flexibility to work both independently and as a team member.  Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to work well under pressure and adjust priorities without close supervision.  This position presents an exciting and rewarding opportunity for the right candidate to be a part of a dynamic team and to perform a valuable public service.
