EDUCATION SECTION
COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA

 

This attorney will serve as lead or secondary counsel to various State education agencies, and will provide centralized guidance and support for Education Section agencies in areas of contracts, real estate.  Working under the direction of the Chief of the Education Section, the attorney will provide lead representation and a wide variety of legal services to the Frontier Culture Museum, New College Institute, and Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center. The attorney will share in the representation of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, and will also provide advice to other education agencies in areas of transactional matters such as contracts and real estate.

 

DUTIES: This individual will handle a broad range of legal issues related to higher education, including without limitation, employment law, contract drafting and review, real estate, administrative process, and policy development and review.  This individual also should be able to provide training on legal issues to personnel and be prepared to appear in the appropriate state or federal court as necessary.  This individual also must be able to respond to legal requests in a timely fashion and work in the evening on occasion.  Occasional travel also is expected.  Additionally, this individual will provide other legal services to agencies in the Education secretariat as directed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Successful candidate will have excellent analytical and writing abilities and oral communication skills, with a minimum of three years of practice.  Experience in State government practice, procurement and contracting, or real estate are preferred.  Excellent interpersonal skills are also required.  High level of organization skills, an ability to manage large numbers of projects simultaneously and to work under pressure is required.  Must be admitted to the Virginia bar or eligible for admission. Salary commensurate with experience.
