~ Citing concerns following President Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey, attorneys general urge appointment of special counsel to handle investigation of Russian interference ~

RICHMOND (May 11, 2017)- Attorney General Mark R. Herring and 19 of his fellow state attorneys general are urging the immediate appointment of an independent special counsel to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election following President Donald Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey during his ongoing investigation.

"It is vital to the rule of law, the proper functioning of our system of justice, and the public trust that law enforcement agencies be allowed to pursue the truth without interference motivated by political or personal self-interest," said Attorney General Herring. "With due respect to the many professionals at the Department of Justice and FBI who have dedicated their lives and careers to the pursuit of truth and justice, I join my colleagues in urging the appointment of a special counsel who can follow the facts wherever they lead."

In a letter today to United States Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the attorneys general state that their constituents "deserve a thorough investigation that makes clear the extent of Russian meddling, any collusion by Trump campaign officials, and any cover-up," and urge the Department of Justice "to consider the damage to our democratic system of any attempts by the administration to derail and delegitimize the investigation."

Joining Attorney General Herring in today's letter are attorneys general from California, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.
