STATEMENT OF ATTORNEY GENERAL MARK R. HERRING

~ On murder conviction of Charles Almond in 33 year old murder case ~

STAUNTON(March 23, 2016)--Attorney General Mark R. Herring issued the following statement today after an Augusta County jury convicted Charles Almond of first-degree murder for the 1983 killing of Richard "Petey" Miller, Almond's son-in-law to be. Herring's office brought charges against Almond and prosecuted the cold case.

"Charles Almond escaped punishment for this crime for more than 30 years, but today he has been brought to justice. I'm really proud that my team and I were able to provide some sense of closure and finality to the Miller family and the people of Augusta County who lived for more than three decades wondering who was responsible for the disappearance and death of young man who was just 20 years old. I appreciate the great work by Phil Figura from my office for prosecuting this difficult case, and of course the perseverance and assistance of the Augusta County Commonwealth's Attorney Office and the Augusta County Sheriff's Office."
