Attorney General of Virginia

Conviction Integrity Unit

In January 2021, the Attorney General of Virginia created the Conviction Integrity Unit (the “CIU”).  The CIU evaluates and investigates claims of innocence to determine whether there is new evidence that the convicted applicant was not the person who committed the offense.  The CIU consists of three attorneys and an investigator and is a distinct and independent office within the Office of the Attorney General.  The CIU’s singular focus is identifying wrongful convictions and taking proactive steps to overturn those wrongful convictions.
