About the Office of the Attorney General’s Computer Crime Section

  • Formed in July 1999

  • Investigates and prosecutes under the Virginia Computer Crimes Act (Virginia Code Sections 152.1-152.16), including computer fraud, computer trespass, spamming, and phishing

  • Investigates and prosecutes child exploitation, including child pornography and online solicitation cases

  • Investigates and prosecutes identity theft

  • Assists law enforcement officers and Commonwealth’s Attorneys and coordinates Virginia’s Internet crime fighting

  • Serves as a founding member of the Virginia Cyber Crime Strike Force, comprised of the EDVA and WDVA U.S. Attorney’s Offices, Virginia State Police, FBI, and Bedford County Sheriff’s Office

  • Educates the public on Internet safety, identity theft prevention, and computer crime trends

  • Trains law enforcement and prosecutors on computer crime laws

  • Assists in drafting computer crime legislation

  • Has testified before the U.S. Congress and the General Assembly on computer crime laws
