MAJOR CRIMES AND EMERGING THREATS
DUTIES: The Major Crimes and Emerging Threats Section ("MCET") provides criminal prosecution and state agency representation for the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Division of the Office of the Attorney General. MCET is seeking attorneys to fill two positions. These positions will be based in Richmond and will focus primarily on representation of state agencies and the Office of Attorney General involving the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (“VFOIA”). The attorneys will provide legal oversight and interpretation of agency responses to VFOIA requests and subpoenas and represent state agencies in court proceedings involving VFOIA issues. In addition, the attorneys may provide a range of legal services as assigned to Agency clients of the Section, which include: The Department of State Police, the Department of Forensic Science, the Department of Criminal Justice Services, the Office of the State Inspector General and others on legal issues ranging from contract and policy review to day to day agency advice matters and handling administrative proceedings to litigation. The positions require knowledge of Virginia civil procedure, VFOIA, the Virginia criminal justice system, and state government.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have graduated from an accredited law school and be admitted to the Virginia State Bar or be eligible for admission. The ideal candidate will have at least three years of relevant experience, including civil and/or prosecutorial experience in Virginia courts. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills are required as well as excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to analyze and manage complex cases. An ability to work independently and serve as an effective liaison with varying organizations is essential.
SALARY: Salary commensurate with qualifications.
