DUTIES: The successful candidate hired into this position will serve as a paralegal in the Major Crimes & Emerging Threats Section and complete tasks to include performing initial investigative review of claims filed against the Commonwealth and client agencies, including the Department of State Police, the Department of Forensic Science, the Department of Criminal Justice Services, the Office of the State Inspector General and others, conducting witness interviews, preparing drafts of legal documents and memoranda for attorney review, performing legal research and writing analytical memoranda for attorney review, maintaining document and file control, and assisting in all phases of litigation preparation and the discovery process. The paralegal will also be responsible for performing limited legal research using online legal research tools. Essential investigative support tasks include obtaining statements and documents from complainants; calculating applicable statute of limitations run dates; performing telephone interviews of witnesses; identifying, reviewing, and managing documents and other investigative evidence. Essential litigation support tasks include issuing standard litigation holds; bate stamp, index, prepare working copies, and maintain documents produced or propounded in discovery; assisting in preparation of responses to document and other discovery requests from opposing parties; prepare affidavits, exhibits and witness notebooks for use at hearings or trials; prepare and maintain tracking charts of document productions; and calculate pretrial order timelines. Other administrative duties may be assigned. The position is based in Richmond, Virginia.
QUALIFICATIONS: Competent working knowledge of legal terminology, court procedures and case management systems. Position requires well-developed written and oral communication skills, proficiency in time management, the ability to work independently and as a team member, and the ability to organize and analyze large quantities of written and verbal information. Candidate must demonstrate the ability to work well under pressure and to adjust priorities without close supervision. Litigation experience is preferred. Bachelor’s degree in related field and/or Paralegal Certificate is preferred; however, an equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the required qualifications may substitute for educational criteria. This position requires the ability to type, familiarity with Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, Word, and Excel), and the ability to learn to use document management and case management software. The preferred candidate will ideally possess experience being a Notary Public.
SALARY: Commensurate with education and experience.
