The Virginia Office of the Attorney General’s Division of Debt Collection is seeking an individual to join its Richmond Office serving as a Claims Representative.  We offer the challenge and opportunity of public service, a professional team environment, and competitive salaries and benefits.

OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL
CIVIL LITIGATION DIVISION
DIVISION OF DEBT COLLECTION

DUTIES:  This position will provide professional legal support in the recovery of medical debts owed to the Commonwealth of Virginia on a large portfolio of cases.  Responsibilities include conducting preliminary research on referred claims; performing initial investigative review of statutory liens or other claims of the Commonwealth; maintaining document and file control; reconciling claim balances and updating interested parties; prepare analytical memoranda for attorney review; and, responding to claim inquiries from client agencies, opposing counsel, and debtors.  Additional duties may include identifying and locating debtors and assets; making demand for payment; establishing/monitoring payment plans; preparing general district and circuit court legal documents for attorney approval; and executing on judgments.  A valid driver’s license and some overnight travel are required.

QUALIFICATIONS:  The successful candidate must possess excellent communication skills and analytical ability; the ability to prioritize the demands of a large caseload; considerable knowledge of legal principles, practices, and processes; familiarity with medical terminology and billing practices; and the ability to work both independently and as a team member to complete complex assignments within prescribed time limits.  Preferences include:  a minimum of three years of extensive medical collections or medical/personal injury litigation experience; a related undergraduate degree with major course work in paralegal studies, medical billing, accounting, business, or public administration; proficiency in word processing and database management systems (Microsoft products in particular).  The successful candidate will be subject to a Criminal Background Check.
