ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL

FINANCIAL LAW AND GOVERNMENT SUPPORT SECTION
DUTIES: The Financial Law and Government Support (“FLAGS”) Section provides legal advice to agencies in the Commonwealth’s Finance, Commerce and Trade, Agriculture and Forestry, Administration, and Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security Secretariats. Located in Richmond, Virginia, this position reports to the Chief of the FLAGS Section. In addition, this position provides agency counsel to specifically assigned state agencies. Responsibilities as agency counsel will include, but not be limited to: representation of the agency when litigation is brought against it; contract review and negotiation for each agency; advice on regulatory questions and personnel matters; attendance at Board Meetings; and guidance regarding the Freedom of Information Act, conflict of interest issues and procurement requirements. This position handles other client assignments, as needed, as part of the FLAGS team. For example, the attorney in this position may be called upon to provide litigation representation to the Virginia Employment Commission in unemployment insurance benefits appeals. The position requires the ability to analyze and provide concise, appropriate, practical and accurate advice on legal issues. Additionally, the position is responsible for assisting in the review and drafting of official advisory opinions of the Attorney General and reviewing legislation during sessions of the Virginia General Assembly.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have graduated from an accredited law school and be admitted to the Virginia State Bar or be eligible for admission. The ideal candidate for this position will have a minimum of two years of relevant experience, including experience in state and federal courts. Excellent interpersonal skills are required as well as excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to analyze and manage complex cases. Starting salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
