Consumer Fraud

The Attorney General enforces state and federal consumer protection statutes that protect consumers from, among other things, deception, misrepresentation, usury, invasions of privacy (e.g., Do Not Call), and price gouging. By way of example, his office prosecutes violations of the Virginia Consumer Protection Act, the Consumer Finance Act and the Solicitation of Contributions statute, plus federal statutes like the Telemarketing and Consumer Fraud and Abuse Prevention Act, and the related Telemarketing Sales Rule. In addition to enforcing laws, the Attorney General educates consumers to be alert to pervasive consumer scams and, on occasion, pushes for new legislation to protect consumer rights. Recent examples of such legislation include the Virginia Telephone Privacy Protection Act, our State “Do Not Call” statute, and the Virginia Post-Disaster Anti-Price Gouging Act.
